Tonights homework

Tonights homework

Sixth graders have had a few guest speakers over the past week who have brought in a hands-on look at ancient civilizations. Samantha’s Uncle Larry brought in an “appetizer sampling” of his extensive collection of ancient coins. Alex from the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum came in to discuss Chinese Science and Technology- we made compasses and created our own printing blocks.

Celebration Eve

Tomorrow will be a festive day no doubt- don’t forget to bring in your Secret Snowperson’s gift! You decided today to put a hint on the gift to make it easier for the other person to guess… what will you draw or write to represent you?

The ghost of Christmas present is giving you the gift of no homework tonight, but here are some things to remember:

-Tomorrow is Crystal’s last official day with us, though she’ll be back to visit in 2011. You will also be able to see her as she will be at school in the mornings. Tonight is your chance to make her something special!

-Erika will be back with us tomorrow to help celebrate. If you’d like to make her something tonight, I’m sure she will appreciate it.

-Tomorrow we will do our Secret Snowperson gift exchange. Check out our class GoogleDoc if you are still unsure about what to get your Snowperson!

See you tomorrow!

Googley Things

It was wonderful to see the payoff of all of the hard work that has been going into the film projects over the past few months. Thanks for sharing! I look forward to checking out the Studio Art exhibition tomorrow; I want to see what you guys have been up to!

Tonight’s homework:

-Spelling: You will have a spelling quiz tomorrow on the following words from the past two weeks- persistent, anticipation, vizier, recognition, plagiarism, and anonymous. Please be prepared to create sentences that use these words in a way that demonstrate your knowledge of their meanings.

-Math: Graphing functions, choose seven. You will have a quiz on concepts 3-1 to 3-7 tomorrow

-Spanish: Continúa el proyecto de Frida Kahlo y Diego Rivera si hay elementos del proyecto en que puedes hacer en casa.  La fecha de entrega es mañana al final de la clase.

Hasta lasagna, don’t get any on-ya.

Ok go!

Here is a link to the music video that you saw as a result of Anthony, Tobin and Tati’s successful demonstration of their invention. The musical group, OK Go! is a favorite of mine, not only because I enjoy their sound, but also because they do really cool stuff, like leading a musical parade through 8.5 miles of LA, while checking in with Range Rover’s Pulse of the City app  to ultimately spell out Ok go in the streets! According to the band, they used the “people as the ‘etch’ and Los Angeles as the ‘sketch’ in one giant, city-sized musical Etch-a-Sketching.” (For those of you who are unfamiliar, this is an Etch-a-Sketch.)

P.S. In this post, OK go suggests that you get involved in something similar to their Etch-a-Sketch musical parade….. what do you think? Any takers?

Secret Snow People

The names have been drawn! Have you referred to our Google Doc lately to see what’s on your Snow Person’s wishlist? Remember to keep it between $10-$20. If you need any ideas, you can solicit the help of others by asking friends, teachers and families for suggestions. We will exchange gifts on Friday!

Imposter Frogs!

I’m interested to hear your thoughts on this morning’s eighth grade campaigns. Did any of that sound familiar to you? Do you remember when we talked about campaign tactics and smear campaigns? Do you have any predictions for which candidate was elected by the NMY population?

A Note from Janie (Your faithful Librarian)

“Every Friday an automated email comes from the library reminding friends of books that are checked out.  These are not all OVERDUE books, but those that are out. The return dates are next to the titles. This helps parents know what materials are checked out to their children and when books need to be returned. Unfortunately it is a canned title in the software and I am not able to change it. I have provided feedback to the company to change it and hopefully they will listen. I do appreciate the messages I get bringing things to my attention, but when you get these messages please do not panic. They are just that—courtesy reminders!”

Snowball fight!

Collaborative Mad Libs

Here is the first of our collaborative Mad Lib series, created by the fifth and sixth graders.

Written by Mitchell, completed by the fifth grade students:

Doctor’s Office

“Hello, Dr. Express.”

“Hello, Mr. Rory.”

“Will you please take off your boxers and step onto the cottage cheese?”

“Hmmm, looks like you weigh pounds. Stand up nice and mongoose-like, let’s measure your height. Looks like you are 12 cubic miles tall. Now, what’s the matter?

“Doctor, my horseshoe bone and arm hurt when I poke them.”

“Ummm, well let me see your horseshoe bone.”

“Okay Mr. Rory, we’re gonna need to run a few tests.”

“What kind of test?”

“A pill and 99 shots.”

“Okay, Dr. Express, do you want me to wait here.”

“No, no, no, the shots take 72 days to prepare.”

“Okay, I’ll be back.”

Later, when the shots are ready:

“Hello Dr. Express.”

“Hello Mr. Rory.

“So here are the shots, okay.”

“Those look sticky.

“They are very sticky.”
